The Medina: Heart of the Old City

The Medina is the walled historic core of Marrakech and the reason most people visit. Staying here means you are within walking distance of Jemaa el-Fnaa square, the souks, and landmark sites like the Bahia Palace and the Saadian Tombs. The classic accommodation is a riad, a traditional house built around an interior courtyard, often with a rooftop terrace.

The trade-off is that the Medina is dense, car-free in most lanes, and can feel chaotic at first. Taxis drop you at the nearest gate and you walk the rest, sometimes with a porter. If you want to be immersed in old Marrakech and do not mind narrow alleys, this is the area to choose.

Gueliz: The Modern Downtown

Gueliz is the New Town, built during the French protectorate and laid out on a grid with wide boulevards. It is home to international restaurants, cafes, boutiques, art galleries, and the Marjane and Carrefour supermarkets. Streets are wide enough for cars and taxis, which many travelers find more relaxing than the Medina.

Gueliz works well for repeat visitors, business travelers, and anyone who prefers a contemporary hotel room over a riad. It is about a 10 to 15 minute taxi ride or a 25 minute walk to Jemaa el-Fnaa, so you trade immediate Medina access for comfort and modern amenities.

Hivernage: Hotels and Nightlife

Hivernage sits between Gueliz and the Medina walls and is known for upscale hotels, the convention center, casinos, and some of the city's best-known nightclubs. It is leafy, quieter than Gueliz by day, and lively after dark.

Choose Hivernage if you want a large international hotel with a pool and spa, plus walkable access to bars and clubs. It is close enough to the Medina to reach Jemaa el-Fnaa in a short taxi ride.

The Palmeraie: Resort Calm

The Palmeraie is a palm grove on the northeastern edge of the city, dotted with luxury resorts, golf courses, and private villas. It is the most peaceful option, with space, greenery, and large pools, but it is a 20 to 30 minute drive from the Medina.

This area suits honeymooners, families wanting a resort base, and travelers who plan day trips into the city rather than exploring on foot. You will rely on taxis or hotel shuttles for everything, so budget for transport.

Riads Versus Hotels

A riad gives you the authentic Marrakech experience: hand-painted tiles, a quiet courtyard, often only a handful of rooms, and personal service including home-cooked breakfast. Most riads are inside the Medina.

Conventional hotels, concentrated in Gueliz, Hivernage, and the Palmeraie, offer elevators, larger pools, gyms, and easier vehicle access. Many travelers split their stay, spending a few nights in a Medina riad and a few in a resort or modern hotel.

Getting Around From Each Area

Petit taxis (small, metered city taxis) are the main way to move between neighborhoods, and fares are low, though you should confirm the meter is on or agree a price first. The Medina is mostly walkable but maze-like, so a phone map helps.

Menara Airport is only about 15 to 20 minutes from most central areas. If you stay in the Palmeraie, factor in longer transfers and the cost of returning to the Medina each evening.

Choosing the Right Base for Your Trip

For a first visit focused on sights and atmosphere, the Medina wins. For comfort, dining, and a base you can leave and return to easily, Gueliz is the safe all-rounder. For nightlife and big hotels, pick Hivernage, and for a quiet resort holiday, choose the Palmeraie.

Consider your tolerance for crowds and noise. The Medina rewards you with immersion but asks for patience; the New Town areas trade some character for ease and space.
