Tan-Tan and Its Moussem: Gateway of the Nomads
Tan-Tan is a gateway town to the Moroccan Sahara, best known for its annual Moussem, a UNESCO-recognised gathering of nomadic tribes that revives the trade and culture of the desert.

Gateway to the Sahara

Tan-Tan sits in southern Morocco where the Anti-Atlas gives way to open desert, marking a symbolic threshold between the cultivated north and the Saharan south. A large concrete arch of kissing camels famously frames the entrance to the town.

The surrounding Guelmim-Oued Noun region is heartland of Hassani nomadic culture. Tan-Tan and nearby Tan-Tan Plage, its small Atlantic port, anchor a community shaped by herding, fishing and desert trade.

The Moussem of Tan-Tan

The Moussem of Tan-Tan is the town's signature event, gathering more than thirty nomadic tribes from southern Morocco and across northwest Africa. First held in 1963, it was interrupted for years and revived in 2004 with UNESCO support.

In 2008 it was inscribed on UNESCO's list of intangible cultural heritage. Hundreds of tents woven from camel and goat hair host the tribes, recreating a traditional gathering of trade, celebration and community.

Camels, Music and Tradition

At the heart of the Moussem is the camel, traded in numbers alongside foodstuffs and crafts. The gathering hosts camel and horse competitions, weddings, herbalists and a rich programme of Hassani music, poetry and oral tradition.

For visitors it offers a rare, concentrated window into Saharan nomadic life: the dress, the song, the food and the social rituals that bind the tribes of the desert across modern borders.

Visiting Tan-Tan

Tan-Tan lies on the N1 between Guelmim and Tarfaya, easily reached by road and regional transport. The Moussem usually takes place toward the end of the year; dates shift, so travellers should confirm the schedule in advance.

Outside the festival, Tan-Tan is a quiet provincial town with basic services, useful as a base for reaching the coast or the deeper south. The desert climate makes the cooler months the most comfortable.
