Merzouga sits beside Erg Chebbi, the postcard Sahara of huge, sculpted golden dunes. It is the more spectacular desert, but it is far: roughly 9-10 hours of driving from Marrakech each way, which is why it works best as a 3-day, 2-night trip. The payoff is genuine dune scenery, camel treks at sunset and sunrise, and proper desert camps.
Zagora is much closer, about 6-7 hours from Marrakech, and can be squeezed into a 2-day, 1-night trip. The catch is that Zagora's dunes are smaller and rockier and the landscape is less dramatic. If you are short on time, Zagora delivers a desert night; if you want the iconic dunes, hold out for Merzouga.
Prices vary widely with group size and camp comfort. A shared 3-day Merzouga group tour typically runs from around 80-150 USD per person, including transport, a standard desert camp and most meals. Standard camps are simple but comfortable, while luxury camps with private bathrooms push the price higher.
A 2-day Zagora tour is cheaper, often around 50-90 USD per person on a shared basis. Private tours, where you control the pace and stops, cost considerably more, frequently 250 USD and up depending on the vehicle and the number of travelers sharing the cost. Always confirm exactly what is included before booking.
The route to Merzouga crosses the High Atlas via the dramatic Tizi n'Tichka pass and passes the UNESCO kasbah of Ait Ben Haddou, the Dades and Todgha gorges, and palm-filled valleys. These are real highlights, not just filler, so the long drive is part of the experience rather than wasted time.
Days are long in the vehicle, so set expectations: you will spend many hours on the road on travel days, broken up by photo stops and meals. The reward is arriving at the dunes for a camel trek into camp, a night under the stars and an unforgettable sunrise.
Book a tour with good recent reviews and a clear inclusions list covering transport, camp, meals and the camel trek. Avoid the desert in peak summer (June to early September), when heat is extreme and many camps close; October, November, February and March are ideal.
Pack layers because desert nights are cold even when days are warm, plus a scarf for blowing sand, sunscreen, a head torch and cash for tips and extras. A small daypack for your overnight kit means you can leave a larger bag in storage with the tour operator.
Merzouga has the dramatic golden dunes of Erg Chebbi and is worth the longer 3-day trip. Zagora is closer and fits a 2-day trip but has smaller, rockier dunes.
A shared 3-day Merzouga tour usually runs about 80-150 USD per person, while a 2-day Zagora trip is roughly 50-90 USD. Private and luxury-camp tours cost significantly more.
No real Sahara dunes are reachable in a day trip. Day tours go to Agafay, a stony desert near Marrakech. For actual dunes you need at least 2 days to Zagora or 3 to Merzouga.
