Ouzoud Waterfalls Day Trip Guide
The Ouzoud Waterfalls are the highest waterfalls in Morocco, plunging around 110 meters in a series of cascades in the Middle Atlas foothills. Located about 150 kilometers northeast of Marrakech, they are one of the country's most popular day trips, offering scenic trails, rainbows in the spray, small boat rides at the base and resident Barbary macaques in the surrounding gorge.

About the Falls

Ouzoud, whose name relates to olives in the local Amazigh language, refers to a spectacular set of waterfalls dropping roughly 110 meters into a gorge of the El Abid River. They are the tallest falls in Morocco and among the most beautiful in North Africa.

The cascades fall in stages, and on sunny days the spray creates rainbows over the pools below. Olive groves and small mills line the surrounding cliffs, adding to the picturesque setting.

Getting There from Marrakech

Ouzoud lies about 150 kilometers northeast of Marrakech, around two and a half to three hours by road. Most visitors come on organized day tours, but it is also reachable by grand taxi or private car via the town of Azilal.

Because of the distance, an early start makes for a more relaxed visit. Day tours typically include transport and time to walk the falls, though they can feel rushed, so independent travelers often prefer to drive and linger.

Walking the Trails

A network of paths leads from the top of the falls down to the pools at the base. The descent passes viewpoints, cafes built into the cliffs and shaded terraces where you can pause for mint tea.

The walk down takes about 20 to 30 minutes and is moderately steep in places, so wear sturdy shoes. At the bottom, the mist, the roar of the water and the surrounding greenery make a dramatic contrast with the dry Moroccan landscape.

Boats, Swimming and Macaques

At the base, small wooden boats ferry visitors close to the falling water, a fun way to feel the spray up close. Some pools are suitable for a cooling swim, popular in the hot summer months.

The gorge is home to troops of Barbary macaques, often seen along the trails and near the cafes. As elsewhere in Morocco, it is best to keep your distance and avoid feeding them. Local guides are available to point out wildlife and the best viewpoints.

Tips for Your Visit

Spring brings the strongest flow thanks to snowmelt and rain, while summer offers warm swimming weather but bigger crowds and lower water levels. Mornings are quieter than afternoons.

Bring water, sun protection and good walking shoes, and carry small cash for cafes, boat rides and guides. Watch your belongings around the macaques, which can be curious. Allow at least half a day on site to enjoy the falls fully.
