Merzouga vs Zagora: Which Sahara Trip?

Both deliver camel rides, desert camps, and starry skies, but the scale and travel time differ significantly. Understanding those differences before booking saves disappointment, as many travelers are surprised that the famous big-dune photos almost always come from Merzouga, not the easily reached Zagora dunes.

Merzouga and Erg Chebbi

Merzouga is a village beside Erg Chebbi, a spectacular sea of orange-gold dunes reaching heights of around 150 metres. These are the postcard dunes most associated with the Moroccan Sahara, ideal for sunrise and sunset photography, sandboarding, and immersive overnight camps right among the sand.

The catch is distance: Merzouga is roughly 560 km from Marrakech, typically reached on a three-day, two-night tour that also takes in Ait Benhaddou, the Todra Gorge, and the Dades Valley. From Fez it is closer, around a seven- to eight-hour drive, making Fez a good alternative starting point.

Zagora and Erg Chigaga

Zagora is the classic 'quick' desert option, about 360 km and a six- to seven-hour drive from Marrakech, commonly done as a two-day, one-night trip. The dunes immediately accessible near Zagora (such as Tinfou) are relatively small, so the experience leans more toward palm oases, the Draa Valley, and the famous 'Timbuktu 52 days' camel-route sign.

For serious dunes from this side, the Erg Chigaga dunes near M'Hamid are larger and wilder, comparable in scale to Erg Chebbi, but they require a long 4x4 transfer over rough tracks and are far less developed. This makes Chigaga rewarding for adventurous travelers but a bigger logistical commitment than standard Zagora trips.

Cost and Time Compared

Zagora trips are shorter and cheaper, fitting easily into a tight Marrakech itinerary as a two-day getaway. Merzouga trips cost more and demand more time but reward you with the genuine big-dune Sahara and generally higher-quality camps, including options ranging from basic to luxury.

Consider how the long driving days factor into your trip. Three days to Merzouga involves substantial time in a vehicle, though the scenery along the route is part of the appeal. If you only have a couple of free days, a forced rush to Merzouga can feel exhausting, making Zagora the more relaxed choice.

What the Camps Are Like

At Merzouga, you will find a wide spread of camps, from simple Berber tents with shared facilities to luxury camps with private en-suite tents, proper beds, and fine dining under the stars. Most include a camel trek into the dunes at sunset and music around a campfire.

Zagora camps tend to be simpler and closer to the road, reflecting the trip's budget orientation, though comfortable options exist. In both cases, nights can be cold even in summer, and the highlight for many is the dark, star-filled sky far from city light pollution.

How to Choose

Pick Merzouga if you want the iconic experience, have three days, and don't mind longer drives or a higher budget; it is the better choice for honeymoons, photography, and bucket-list desert nights. Consider starting from Fez to shorten the journey.

Pick Zagora if you have limited time or money, are based in Marrakech, and simply want to ride a camel, sleep in the desert, and see the Draa palm groves without committing several days. For the best of both worlds with adventure, look at Erg Chigaga via M'Hamid.
