The Gateway to Toubkal

Imlil sits at 1,740 metres in a valley of the High Atlas, roughly 90 minutes by road from Marrakech. It is the undisputed gateway to Mount Toubkal, the launch point for nearly every ascent of North Africa's highest peak, and the natural base for exploring the wider Toubkal National Park.

Once a quiet farming village, Imlil has grown into a bustling trekking hub while retaining its Berber character. Its compact centre buzzes with guides, guesthouses, gear shops and mules being loaded for the trail, all set against a backdrop of terraced fields, walnut groves and towering peaks.

Accommodation and Facilities

Imlil offers a wide range of accommodation, from simple guesthouses and gîtes to comfortable mountain lodges and a few upscale retreats nearby. Many places have stunning valley views and serve hearty Berber meals, making them ideal for resting before and after a trek.

The village has small shops selling snacks, water and basic supplies, plus cafes and a few restaurants. There are no ATMs in the village, so bring sufficient cash from Marrakech for guides, accommodation, tips and provisions.

Hiring Guides and Mules

Imlil is where most trekkers arrange their licensed mountain guide, mandatory for Toubkal, along with mules and muleteers to carry baggage to the refuge. The village has an established system of qualified guides, and many guesthouses can organise everything on arrival.

Booking ahead is wise in peak season, but it is also possible to arrive and hire on the spot. Agreeing prices clearly in advance, including refuge fees, meals and mule hire, avoids confusion. Hiring locally puts income directly into the community.

Gear and Provisions

Several shops in Imlil rent and sell trekking equipment, including boots, jackets, sleeping bags, trekking poles and, in winter, crampons and ice axes. Quality varies, so trekkers wanting reliable gear should bring their own essentials, especially footwear.

It is the last place to stock up on snacks, water and any forgotten items before heading high, as the refuges have only limited and pricier supplies. Stock energy food and ensure you have enough water capacity for the long climb to the refuge.

Day Walks for Non-Summiteers

Imlil is not only for summit-seekers. The surrounding valley offers excellent day hikes for those not attempting Toubkal, including walks to nearby villages like Aroumd (Aremd), the Kasbah du Toubkal, and viewpoints over the valley.

A popular gentle option is the walk to the shrine of Sidi Chamharouch along the lower Toubkal trail, while fitter walkers can tackle passes for panoramic views. These shorter excursions make Imlil a rewarding mountain base even for non-mountaineers.

Getting There From Marrakech

Imlil is reached via the town of Asni on a paved mountain road from Marrakech, taking around 90 minutes by car or grand taxi. Shared taxis run from Marrakech to Asni and then on to Imlil, offering a budget option, while private transfers are easily arranged.

The road is winding but scenic, climbing steadily into the Atlas. Many trekkers travel up the day before their climb to acclimatise and rest, then return to Marrakech after descending. The journey itself offers a striking transition from city to high mountains.

Best Time to Visit

Imlil is a year-round destination, but its role shifts with the seasons. From April to October it is the springboard for summer Toubkal ascents, bustling with international trekkers and offering snow-free high routes.

In winter, Imlil becomes a base for snow climbs and ski touring, with crampons and ice axes essential up high. Spring brings blossom to the valley, and even in the hottest months the altitude keeps the village cooler and fresher than Marrakech below.
