The 2026 edition, the 27th, takes place from June 25 to 27 in Essaouira, the breezy Atlantic port long beloved by musicians and travellers. It is Morocco's flagship celebration of Gnaoua music, a hypnotic, trance-inducing tradition rooted in the spiritual heritage of West and sub-Saharan Africa.
For three days the whitewashed medina becomes one big open-air stage. Most concerts are free, running from sunset deep into the night, and the whole town turns into a communal celebration where the line between performer and crowd blurs.
This year's bill mixes Gnaoua masters with international names. Expect performances from Mehdi Nassouli, Abdelkader Haddada, Hoba Hoba Spirit, Sara Moullablad and a roll-call of maalems including Mohamed Kouyou, Khalid Izoubaz, Mohamed Montari and Houssam Gania.
International and fusion acts round out the program, with names such as Richard Bona, the Palestinian-Jordanian group 47Soul, Ganavya, Sylvain Barou and Anthony Morgan and Harlem Spirit of Gospel. The headliners draw the crowds, but the magic often lives in the smaller, late-night sets.
What sets Gnaoua apart is its fusion programming. The festival deliberately pairs Gnaoua maalems with musicians from jazz, gospel, West African and electronic backgrounds, and many of these collaborations are barely rehearsed, creating one-off performances that exist only in that single moment.
That unpredictability is the festival's signature. You might catch a maalem trading rhythms with a jazz bassist or a gospel choir, building something neither could make alone. Serious music fans plan their nights around these crossover stages, where the surprises tend to be the highlights.
Essaouira is small and fills up fast during the festival, so book accommodation well ahead and expect busy streets. The town sits about two and a half to three hours west of Marrakech by road, making a Marrakech base and a festival day-trip a popular option, though staying overnight lets you enjoy the late shows.
Pair the music with the town itself: the windswept beach, the fresh seafood at the port, the blue-shuttered medina and, this year, an Atlantic breeze that offers welcome relief if the late-June Chergui heat is biting inland. Bring water, comfortable shoes and patience for crowds, and you are set.
