Moving Around Morocco

Morocco has trains, buses, shared taxis, and city taxis, each with its own etiquette. A few Darija phrases help you negotiate fares, find the right transport, and avoid the common tourist overcharge.

This lesson covers stating your destination, asking fares, the taxi types, and key travel words. We build on directions from Lesson 7 and numbers from Lesson 3, with Arabizi and Arabic script throughout.

Stating Your Destination

Use 'Bghit nemshi l...' (بغيت نمشي ل), 'I want to go to...': 'Bghit nemshi l lmahatta' (I want to go to the station), 'Bghit nemshi l lmtar' (to the airport). To ask if transport goes somewhere, 'Wesh kat mshi l...?' (does it go to...?).

Key places: 'lmahatta' (station), 'mahattat ttran' (train station), 'lgar' (bus/coach station), 'lmtar' (airport), 'lmina' (port). 'Tikit' or 'wer9a' is a ticket; ask 'Bghit tikit l...' (I want a ticket to...).

Taxis: Petit and Grand

Morocco has two taxi types. 'Taxi sghir' (small taxi) operates within cities and should use a meter, 'kontور'; insist with 'b lkontour 3afak'. 'Taxi kbir' (grand taxi) is a shared Mercedes running fixed routes between towns, usually six passengers.

For city taxis say 'Wddini l...' (take me to...) and 'b lkontour 3afak' (by the meter please). For grand taxis, you may buy a single seat, 'blasa wahda', or pay for the whole car, 'taxi kaml'. Always agree the price before departing.

Asking the Fare

'Bsh7al l...?' (بشحال ل؟) means 'how much to...?', as in 'Bsh7al l lmtar?' (how much to the airport?). If the price seems high, use Lesson 6 tactics: 'Ghali bzaf' and propose your number.

Useful phrases: 'Sh7al ghadi tkhllini?' (how much will you charge me?), 'B lkontour wla bla?' (with the meter or without?), 'Khlas qbel?' (do I pay first?). Knowing the rough local rate protects you from inflated tourist fares.

On the Road

Direct the driver with 'Wqef hna' (وقف هنا, stop here), 'Sir nishan' (go straight), 'Dour 3la limen' (turn right), 'Hna mzyan' (here is good). 'Tsenna shwiya' means 'wait a moment'.

Travel words: 'mosafir' (traveler), 'baggaj' or '7wayj' (luggage), 'bekri' (early), 'm3ettel' (late), 'fin nbeddel?' (where do I change?). For trains, 'darija' or 'class' indicates seat class. 'Imta kaymshi?' asks 'when does it leave?'.

Sample Dialogue

A traveler, Noah, takes a petit taxi:

Noah: Salam, wddini l lmahatta 3afak. (Hello, take me to the station please.) — Driver: Wakha, tfeddel. (Okay, get in.) — Noah: B lkontour 3afak? (By the meter please?) — Driver: Iyeh, b lkontour. (Yes, by the meter.) — Noah: Sh7al ghadi ydir? (How much will it be?) — Driver: Taqriban 3ashrin derhem. (About twenty dirhams.) — Noah: Mzyan. Wqef hna 3afak. (Good. Stop here please.) — Driver: Hak ssrf. (Here's your change.)

Practice Tips

Always agree the fare or insist on the meter before the taxi moves; 'b lkontour 3afak' for petit taxis and a fixed price for grand taxis saves money and arguments. Knowing your numbers makes this effortless.

Combine this lesson with directions: 'wddini l', 'wqef hna', and 'dour 3la limen' let you guide any driver. Learn the two taxi types well, since choosing 'sghir' versus 'kbir' correctly is the single biggest transport win.
