Walid Regragui: Morocco's World Cup Coach
Walid Regragui is the head coach of Morocco's national football team. Appointed in August 2022, he guided the Atlas Lions to the semi-finals of the 2022 World Cup, the best-ever finish by an African or Arab nation, after previously winning the CAF Champions League with Wydad Casablanca.

Playing career and roots

Born in 1975 in Corbeil-Essonnes, France, to Moroccan parents, Walid Regragui grew up in the Paris suburbs before forging a professional career as a defender. He played mostly as a right-back, turning out for clubs in France and Spain, and earned caps for Morocco's national team during the 2000s.

That dual background, French football education combined with a deep connection to Morocco, would later shape his management style. Regragui understood both the European system many of his players came through and the cultural identity that binds the Moroccan squad together.

Rise as a manager

Regragui moved into coaching after retiring, taking charge of FUS Rabat, where he won a domestic title, before later leading Wydad Casablanca. With Wydad he won the Moroccan league and the CAF Champions League, Africa's premier club competition, cementing his reputation as one of the continent's brightest coaches.

His success at club level made him a natural candidate when the Morocco federation sought a new national-team coach in 2022, just months before the World Cup in Qatar.

The 2022 World Cup run

Taking over only weeks before the tournament, Regragui united the squad around a disciplined, defensively solid system that frustrated some of the world's best teams. Morocco topped a group containing Croatia and Belgium, then knocked out Spain on penalties and Portugal in the quarter-finals.

Reaching the semi-finals made Morocco the first African and first Arab nation ever to do so. The achievement turned Regragui into a national hero and a symbol of pride across Africa and the Arab world.

Style and philosophy

Regragui is known for organisation, defensive resilience and man-management. He emphasises team unity, a strong collective shape and the ability to absorb pressure before striking on the counter-attack.

He has also spoken openly about belief and ambition, encouraging his players and African football more broadly to aim for the very top rather than settle for plucky underdog status.
